Brahms Clara temetése után

The Piano Quintet in F minor by Brahms – to be played by Balázs Fülei and the Kodály Quartet at their concert in Zalaegerszeg on February 22nd – is also connected with Clara Schumann whose lifelong friendship with Brahms is widely known.

Initially, Brahms was planning to write a string quintet; however, his friends, with Joseph Joachim among them, did not like that. As a result, he transcribed it into a sonata for two pianos. He and Carl Tausig performed it for the first time in Vienna in the spring of 1864; then, in the summer, he played it with Clara in Baden-Baden but he was still dissatisfied. In autumn, he went on working on it and eventually found the sound he had been looking for: the Piano Quintet in F minor was born. Having received the score, Clara Schumann wrote to Brahms: „I feel as if I have read a grandiose, tragic story”. The premiere of the piano quintet was held on June 12, 1865 in the Basel house of the composer’s friends, the Riggenbach-Stehlin couple, with the composer himself at the piano.
