Bartók and Szigeti

„My first and most important concert” – wrote Bartók to a Swiss friend about the second concert of his second overseas tour on April 13th, 1940 in the Library of Congress in Washington played with József Szigeti who had already emigrated to the United States.

Szigeti, by the way, was one of the most characteristic performers of Bartók’s oeuvre and one of his favourite chamber music partners; between 1927 and 1941 they gave sixteen joint concerts. One of the most beautiful documents of this joint work is the recording of this concert in Washington having won historic significance by now. The programme included Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata, Debussy’s Sonata for Violin and Piano and two works by Bartók: Sonata No.2. and the Rhapsody No.1. This legendary concert will be revived by Attila Falvay and Balázs Fülei on Bartók’s birthday, on March 25th in the Bartók Memorial House.
